Jean Miotte

París, 1926

Jean Miotte (Paris, 1926 - 2016), was a renowned French artist who worked within the style of gestural abstraction, also known as L'art Informel. The artist experimented with different pictorial and graphic media, from oil and acrylic to gouache, ink, etching, lithography or collage. Jean Miotte developed a vocabulary of energetic, almost calligraphic signs whose liquid jets and paint jumps suggested the body in motion and at the same time moved away from the corporeity.

Dance, movement and music have been decisive and constant influences on his work. Black paint applied to a white or bare surface is an almost constant theme that reminds us of oriental calligraphy; when color appears, it ranges from basic to earthy tones.
