Ouka Leele
Madrid, 1976
Ouka Leele (Madrid, 1957 - 2022), born Bárbara Allende Gil de Biedma, was a Spanish artist, photographer, painter, and poet, and one of the most iconic figures of the Movida madrileña cultural movement.
She began her career publishing black and white photographs and from the late 1970s developed a highly personal style by hand‑coloring her images with watercolor, merging photography and painting to create a distinctive visual language.
Ouka Leele exhibited extensively in solo and group shows both in Spain and internationally, with her work shown in cities such as Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, and São Paulo. She was awarded the National Photography Award in 2005 and the Silver Medal of the Community of Madrid in 2012, among other honors.
Her art, defined by visual poetry, color exploration, and formal innovation, remains influential in Spanish contemporary photography and art.
