A herald unto himself, that was my thought as I contemplated this remarkable ensemble of sculptures, collages, and drawings that Carlos Albert (Madrid, 1978) now presents at Madrid’s BAT Gallery, celebrating the gallery’s four decades of activity while also marking the twentieth anniversary of the sculptor’s first exhibition there. With this exhibition, we celebrate Albert’s arrival at a splendid artistic maturity, for this is a true corpus of work that, in all its complexity, expresses the sculptor’s profound formal inquiry while simultaneously revealing a forceful visual language that now expands ever more fully into the surrounding space. Sculptures and works on paper alike emerge as that “galaxy of intense intentions” once described by Harald Szeemann (2). Here Albert has brought together love and sculptural obsession, for contemplating these works becomes an exercise in praise of concentration.
