Madrid, 1954
Fernando Bellver (Madrid, 1954) is a Spanish painter, printmaker, and visual artist recognized as an important figure in contemporary figurative art. Born into a family with a strong artistic lineage, he trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid in drawing, painting, and sculpture, and later specialized in printmaking techniques at Dimitri Papageorgiu’s workshop.
Since his first exhibitions in the 1970s, Bellver has developed a distinguished career marked by a visual language that combines figuration with a critical, ironic, and reflective approach to society and art history. His work often reinterprets familiar images, transforming them and using color with mastery to offer a personal reading of reality.
In 1981, he co‑founded Taller Mayor 28 in Madrid, a creative space that brought together key figures of contemporary Spanish art. He has exhibited widely in national and international galleries, participated in major art fairs such as ARCO, and taught as a visiting professor at institutions like the University of Austin (Texas). Bellver’s work has been recognized with important distinctions, including the 2008 National Graphic Art Award, the Gold Medal at the Cairo Biennale and at the Alexandria Biennale, and the Silver Medal at the Ljubljana Print Biennial, establishing him as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Spanish graphic art. His works are held in major public and private collections, including the Reina Sofía Museum and the ICO Collection, and he remains a singular voice in critical figurative art today.
