José Manuel Ciria
Manchester, 1960
One of the most outstanding artists of his generation and a central figure in contemporary Spanish painting. Since his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1984, he has developed an extensive career with exhibitions in museums in Tel Aviv, Moscow, Warsaw, Zacatecas, Bern, Mérida, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and the IVAM, among others.
His artwork moves between expressionist figuration and poetic abstraction, combining the spontaneous flow of the brushstroke with geometric structure, while exploring iconography, materials, and supports. Since 2005, his production has been characterized by a balance between gestural freedom and constructive rigor.
Ciria has received numerous national and international awards, including recognitions in Cairo, Valdepeñas, Madrid, Córdoba, and Marbella. His artwork has been praised by critics such as Donald Kuspit for his mastery of the abstract language and his ability to transform abstraction into evocative, ever-changing figures.
