Marc Chagall

Bielorusia, 1887

Marc Chagall (Belarus, 1887 - 1985), was one of the most unclassifiable artists of the 20th century first years. Obviously his works have a lot of surrealism, but his very personal use of color and shapes, link him to Russian expressionism and to the cubism that he discovered in France, country that would adopt him. Chagall is an artist difficult to place in a specific style, although his influences are visible (if not explicit), but he mixes them naturally and elegantly.

The artist was born in a Belarusian village, but when he discovered his vocation, he felt the need to travel to Paris, where he came into contact with the first avant-gardes. He returns to Russia and actively participates in the Russian Revolution but ends up returning to Paris, where he meets other Jewish artists such as Modigliani.
