Subirachs
Barcelona, 1927
Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar (Barcelona, 1927 - 2014) was one of the most versatile and renowned artists of the Spanish contemporary art scene. Sculptor, painter, engraver, stage designer, and art critic, his artwork enjoys wide international recognition and can be found in museums and public spaces in numerous cities around the world. Among his most emblematic artworks is the monumental intervention on the "Passion Façade" of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
His artistic trajectory went through different phases (Mediterranean, Expressionist, Abstract, and New Figuration) always marked by the strength of geometric forms, structural rigor, angular lines, and textured surfaces. These elements were combined with a symbolic language infused with cultural, historical, and spiritual references, creating a unique and unmistakable universe.
For Subirachs, art was always a means of vital affirmation, a way of vindicating creation over destruction. His legacy lives on as a testament to a creator who masterfully united technique, symbolism, and transcendence in a unique body of artwork with universal reach.
