Barcelona, 1923
Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012) was one of the most influential artists in European contemporary art and a key figure of Informalism. He began his career in the 1940s and co-founded the avant-garde magazine Dau al Set (1948). After an early phase influenced by Miró and Klee, he developed his own language centered on matter-based painting, using unconventional materials and exploring matter, nature, and spirituality.
Committed to his time, his artwork often carried a strong political and critical message, particularly during the Franco regime. From the 1970s onward, he incorporated objects into his work and engaged deeply with Eastern philosophy and culture.
Tàpies was also a distinguished intellectual and writer. In 1984, he founded the Antoni Tàpies Foundation in Barcelona, dedicated to the study and promotion of contemporary art. His work is exhibited in leading museums around the world.
