Chandpur, 1943
Monirul Islam (Chandpur, Bangladesh, 1943), known as Monir, is an internationally renowned Bangladeshi-Spanish artist, recognized for his etching and experimental techniques, which gave rise to the so-called “School of Monir”. He studied at the University of Dhaka and later at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he chose to settle permanently.
His work focuses on etching and abstraction, characterized by empty spaces, delicate lines, textures, and forms, exploring lyrical abstraction and introspection. He combines Western graphic tradition with cultural memory, creating a sober and poetic language of great technical rigor and conceptual depth.
He has received important distinctions, including the National Printmaking Prize from the Calcografía Nacional of Madrid (1997), the Ekushey Padak (1999), the Cross of Officer of the Order of Queen Isabella (2010), and the Commander of the Spanish Order of Merit (2018). His work is regularly exhibited in Spain and abroad, while maintaining a deep connection to his Bangladeshi roots, which inform the sensitivity and poetic language of his art.
