about Rafael Canogar
Toledo, 1935
Rafael Canogar (Toledo, 1935) is one of the most significant Spanish contemporary artists, particularly noted for his contributions to abstraction and informalism in the 20th century. He began his artistic training with painter Daniel Vázquez Díaz and soon embraced European avant-garde influences, developing a personal visual language focused on material exploration, gesture, and form.
In 1957 he co‑founded the El Paso group, alongside artists such as Antonio Saura, Manuel Millares, and Luis Feito. Works from this period are characterized by expressive, almost physical application of paint. Throughout the 1960s he experimented with figuration and social critique, before returning to abstraction in the 1970s.
Canogar has exhibited widely in Spain and abroad, including participation in major biennials such as Venice and São Paulo, and his work has been featured in retrospectives at institutions like the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid) and IVAM (Valencia). His work is held in major public and private collections worldwide. His honors include the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1982) and the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts (2003).
