Shanghái, 1929
Walasse Ting (Shanghai, 1929 - New York, 2010) was a Chinese-American artist known for his expressive, colorful painting, blending influences from traditional Chinese painting with modern Western art. After studying in China, Ting moved to Paris in 1952, joining the modern European art scene and connecting with artists like Karel Appel and Asger Jorn from the CoBrA group. He later settled in New York, developing a more pop and lyrical style, with vibrant colors and energetic compositions.
His work spans painting, illustration, and printmaking, with recurring motifs of women, cats, flowers, and landscapes, executed in a direct, joyful, and poetic visual language. Ting aimed to create a universal and accessible art, where the energy of color and spontaneity of gesture convey immediate emotion. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major public and private collections across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
