The artist Alberto Ràfols-Casamada (Barcelona, 1923 - 2009) was a poet and painter. He began his studies in architecture but abandoned them to dedicate himself fully to the visual arts, thanks to the support of his father. He was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1980, the National Visual Arts Prize of Catalonia in 2003, and was named an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
Ràfols-Casamada began his artistic career within the post-expressionist and figurative movement; later, his work evolved toward abstraction. This evolution was also reflected in the theater, where he created stage designs and sets. His work is included in important collections and museums.
