about Josep Guinovart
Barcelona, 1927
Josep Guinovart i Bertran (Barcelona, 1927 - 2007) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, recognized as one of the foremost figures of informalism and abstraction in Catalonia and Spain. Guinovart trained at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de Barcelona and traveled to Paris in 1953, where his work became more abstract and textural. In 1954, he co‑founded the Taüll group with artists such as Antoni Tàpies, advancing the avant‑garde painting of the period.
Guinovart’s work is distinguished by its intense exploration of material, texture, and color, often incorporating three‑dimensional elements, bringing his pieces close to collage and assemblage, and reflecting influences from the Mediterranean landscape alongside social and political concerns.
In addition to painting, Guinovart worked in printmaking, illustration, tapestry, theater set design, and poster art, and created public works in several Spanish cities. He received honors such as the National Award for Plastic Arts (1982) and the Cruz de Sant Jordi, and his work is held in institutions like the Museo Reina Sofía and MACBA.
