about Manuel Rivera
Granada, 1995
Manuel Rivera (Granada, 1927 - Madrid, 1995) was a Spanish painter and a key figure in abstract and informalist art in Spain. He was a founding member of the influential group El Paso (1957-1960), which played a central role in renewing Spanish art in the post-war period.
His work is distinguished by the innovative use of metal meshes, wire, and metallic fabrics, incorporated into the pictorial surface to create compositions of great visual and poetic intensity. Through these materials, Rivera explored the relationship between light, space, transparency, and matter, pushing beyond traditional painting and expanding the boundaries of the medium.
Rivera exhibited extensively in Spain and internationally, participating in major exhibitions and biennials. His work is held in important public and private collections, including the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, and the Guggenheim Museum (New York).
