about Obey

Obey is the art name associated with American street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey (Charleston, USA, 1970). Fairey first gained attention in the late 1980s with his Obey Giant campaign, featuring images of wrestler André the Giant on stickers and posters placed around cities to provoke thought about propaganda, consumerism, and authority.
His work is marked by a visual style influenced by Russian poster art, pop art, and street art, often using stark colors (black, white, and red) and designs that carry open social and political commentary. Fairey uses public space as a primary platform for artistic expression, blending art with social critique.
In addition to his urban work, Fairey has exhibited in solo and group shows since the early 2000s, and his art is included in collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) and the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York).
