Kobe, 1916
Kumi Sugaï (Kobe, Japan, 1916 - Paris, 1996) was a Japanese painter based in France, recognized as one of the major figures of Japanese abstract art in Europe. After studying in Japan, he moved to Paris in 1939, where he developed a distinctive visual language inspired by Japanese calligraphy and Western lyricism, combining lines, forms, and colors with a poetic, gestural approach.
His work moves between geometric and lyrical abstraction, exploring color harmony and compositional balance. Sugaï exhibited in major European museums and international galleries, leaving a lasting influence on 20th‑century European abstract painting.
