Manuel Viola

about Manuel Viola
Zaragoza, 1916
Manuel Viola (Zaragoza, 1916 - Madrid, 1987) was a Spanish painter and a leading figure of informalist abstraction, as well as one of the main representatives of abstract expressionism in Spain. After initial training in Zaragoza, he moved to Paris in the 1950s, where he engaged with European avant-garde movements that decisively shaped his artistic development.
His work is characterized by gestural and material-based painting, marked by strong expressive intensity, with color and texture playing a central role. Viola created dynamic compositions that explore the relationship between emotion, gesture, and pictorial space. He was a founding member of the influential group El Paso (1957–1960), which was instrumental in the renewal of post-war Spanish art.
He exhibited widely in major national and international galleries and museums, and his work is included in collections such as the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, and other European institutions.
