Madrid, 1935
Manuel Alcorlo (Madrid, 1935) was a Spanish painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator renowned for his imagination, humor, and expressive figurative work. He trained at the School of Arts and Crafts, the Ceramics School of La Moncloa, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and the Higher School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, and from the start developed a creative universe combining fantasy, irony, and keen observation of everyday life.
In 1960 he won the Premio Roma, which enabled him to study on scholarship for four years at the Spanish Academy in Rome. After returning, he pursued an active career with numerous solo and group exhibitions across Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Austria. His work spans painting, drawing, etching, and lithography, featuring scenes populated by characters and situations combining satire, expressionism, and festive color.
Throughout his career he received multiple awards, including the Premio Mapfre de Dibujo (1983), and in 1998 he was appointed Academic of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In 2020, a major retrospective exhibition at the Academy showcased approximately 84 works representing his career, highlighting his technical mastery, humor, and his ability to explore themes ranging from the intimate to the social with a singular and unmistakable artistic language.
